Sig Sauer Romeo 5 Review

Sig Sauer’s Romeo 5 1x20mm Compact Red Dot Sight has achieved bestseller status by incorporating a rugged form factor, quality features, and a comfortable price point. With all of the features and longstanding performance, the Romeo 5 remains a popular optic for rifle and carbine applications.

Brought to you by a great firearms manufacturer and top purveyor of shooting accessories, Sig Sauer has demonstrated its ability to bring quality products to market. Sig Sauer’s optics have been mounted on many firearms and remain a popular choice for shooters of all levels.

Design

This Romeo 5 series has a compact tube style form factor made with a matte finished aircraft-grade aluminum chassis weighing only 5.1 oz. It is designed with Sig Sauer’s reflection armor trapezoidal surfacing. The surfacing is intended to break up the optic cylindrical shape and visibility of the optic, aiding in the shooter’s signature reduction.

The optic has an overall length of 2.47 inches with a width of 1.5 inches and a height of 1.52 inches, weighing only 5.1 oz (with 1.41-inch riser mount and battery) making it the lightest of the Romeo5 series.

The sight has an An optic's Ingress Protection (IP) code from IEC 60529: the first digit rates dust (0 to 6), the second rates water (0 to 8). A digit shown as X was simply not tested.Full comparison → of X7 (IPX-7). This rating means that the optic can withstand immersion in up to 1 meter of water. With this rating, you can expect excellent dependability and fog-proof operation under wet and high humidity conditions.

Lenses

You can expect clear viewing through this 1x magnified sight with lenses that have excellent light transmission. This red dot sight includes glass lenses coated with Spectracoat. This lens coating is highly efficient and enables viewing across an ultra-wide band of the visible light spectrum.

The coating has excellent anti-reflective qualities reducing surface reflections to extremely low levels. The lenses deliver quality viewing under various lighting levels, making target identification and acquisition quick and easy, all with the added benefit of a reduced signature when a stealthy approach is required.

Operation

The illumination controls are mounted on the top of the sight. Simply press and hold either the (+) or (-) button longer than 1 second to turn the sight on.

Press and hold either the (+) or (-) button longer than 1 second to turn the LED dot off.

The Romeo 5 has a maximum windage and elevation adjustment of +/- 40 MOA. The adjustments are in 0.5 MOA increments with a flat edge utilizing top and side-mounted adjustment knobs.

With 0.5 MOA adjustments, you can achieve a level of precision that will allow for accurate shooting from close to intermediate distances. And with the rugged design, you can expect no change of Point of Impact (POI) no matter how many rounds you put through your rig.

The sight uses a single A 3-volt lithium coin cell, 20mm across, and the most common red dot battery (about 210 to 240 mAh). Stocked almost everywhere, so a field swap is easy.Full comparison → lithium coin cell battery that will provide up to a 40,000+ hour battery life depending on what illumination setting is used.

Changing the battery is accomplished from the side. This reflex sight is considered parallax-free, so you can expect the point-of-aim to be the point-of-impact. The sight has unlimited eye relief to acquire your target from any eye position behind the optic.

Motion Activated

The Romeo 5 is outfitted with Sig Sauer’s Motion Activated Illumination (MOTAC) feature that powers up the sight reticle when it senses movement. Conversely, if the optic remains at rest without motion for 2 minutes, the reticle will power off. Motion-activated reticles enjoy the benefit of extended battery life, keeping the Romeo 5 ready for action when it’s needed.

Reticle

The Sig Romeo 5 (SOR52001) utilizes a 2 MOA red dot reticle. The reticle has ten illumination settings selected through plus and minus buttons located on the optic’s top. Eight of the brightness settings are for daylight and other bright light operating environments.

The remaining two settings are for night vision or low light operating environments. With ten illumination levels, the sight can function in almost all light conditions, giving the shooter or hunter plenty of employment options.

Mounting

The sight is ready to mount on a standard Picatinny/MIL-STD-1913 rail. Included is a 1.41-inch riser for a co-witness mounting option. Additionally, you can use it in a low-profile mount more suited for pistol and shotgun setups. The mount is adjusted with the included T10 Torx wrench. Switching between mounting options is easy.

6 of 6 durability tests passed 1 documented failure mode
What those tests were
  • submersion: pass . First-hand: Pew Pew Tactical (Eric Hung / Ken Whitmore) submerged the mounted Romeo5 underwater for 10 minutes with no water intrusion and no internal tube fogging. Original SOR52001.
  • submersion: pass . First-hand water exposure (rain, not immersion): Tina Fa'apoi (Target Tamers) deliberately left the Romeo5 out in a 60-minute monsoon downpour with the glass fully drenched; the dot continued to function. She explicitly declined to run drop and freeze tests.
  • drop: pass . First-hand: Pew Pew Tactical dropped the mounted Romeo5 from knee to shoulder height onto dirt, grass and rocky terrain; the optic survived with only scuff marks and showed no sign of zero being disturbed. No measured before/after MOA figure was published.
  • freeze: pass . First-hand: Pew Pew Tactical placed the Romeo5 in a freezer at about -5 F for 3 hours; the dot brightness was undimmed afterward.
  • recoil: pass . First-hand: Paul Whaley (Primer Peak) fired roughly 1,800 rounds over about a month with no zero shift and no malfunction. Qualitative hold-zero, no measured MOA shift; described by the reviewer as normal use, not a torture test.
  • recoil: pass . First-hand: Shooting Illustrated's 2017 affordable-red-dot group test zeroed at 25 yards, fired a measured 250 rounds of Federal MSR 5.56, and re-checked zero with no discernible shift. Original Romeo5 (predates the Gen II).

Aggregated from others' first-hand testing, not our own. We surface a sourced reputation tier rather than inventing a score the evidence cannot support.
