Documented failure modes

  • Trijicon MRO (2 MOA red dot, MRO-C-2200005): front lens destroyed and battery cap launched off the optic under direct shotgun/rimfire impact (deliberate destruction test) . First-hand destruction test (Pew Pew Tactical High-End Optics Torture Test): the MRO survived .22 rat shot, .410 birdshot (small front-lens crack, stayed operational) and 12ga birdshot, then was finally killed by a .22 LR minimag (1235 fps) which destroyed the front lens and blew off the battery cap. The reviewer noted most other high-end optics in the same test were also felled around this point, so this is an extreme-impact result, not a normal-use failure.
  • Trijicon RMR Type 2 (RM06): dot flicker / shutoff / dim under recoil (battery loses contact; battery shifts in slide MOS groove) . This is a Type 1 / legacy LED RMR problem (RM01/RM06/RM07/RM09), confirmed first-hand by multiple owners on m4carbine. Trijicon redesigned the Type 2 (2017) with a stronger battery contact/tensioner specifically to fix this; no qualifying first-hand report of recoil-flicker on a genuine Type 2 was found. Owner workarounds for Type 1 were tape/Duracell/contact-bending/flicker plates, which did not always hold.
  • Trijicon RMR Type 2 (RM06): front objective lens detached and flew off downrange after dot ballooned (heat + high round count) . First-hand: a Type 1 RM09 (installed Nov 2016) on a Glock 19; in ~90s F heat the dot ballooned, vanished, then the front glass separated. Type 1 unit, not Type 2. No equivalent Type 2 lens-detachment was documented in the first-hand sources cited here.
  • Trijicon RMR HD: failures-to-eject / spent case striking the optic lens (Springfield Echelon) . Owner 'Smurfslayer' reported FTE malfunctions and a case striking the HD lens beginning around 8,980 rounds after switching to the HD on a Springfield Echelon; he counted ~9 total malfunctions, attributed several to ammo (Magtech) and noted Trijicon's manual reportedly warns against the Echelon ejection-port geometry. Another owner ('Jedi54') ran the same Echelon + HD combo ~700 rounds with zero malfunctions. Reads as a host-gun ejection-geometry interaction, not an optic-internal failure; no zero loss reported. No DOA/optic-electronics failure was documented in any resolvable first-hand source.
  • Trijicon SRO (Specialized Reflex Optic, 1 / 2.5 / 5 MOA): control buttons quit working after years of hard use (optic still powered on, brightness buttons dead) . First-hand: Rokslide owner 'TradLife406' ran an SRO ~4-5 years with hard use on a 10mm and a Glock 34; the failure was not lens breakage but the adjustment/brightness buttons ceasing to function while the unit still powered on. Single documented hard-use electronic/control failure; other long-term owners in the same thread reported no failures.
  • Trijicon SRO (Specialized Reflex Optic, 1 / 2.5 / 5 MOA): battery-contact failure with Duracell CR2032 (bitter anti-chew coating interferes with contact) . Trijicon issued guidance (relayed on Canadian Gun Nutz, Dec 2025) that Duracell CR2032 cells with bitter coating can cause battery-contact issues; the company recommends Energizer CR2032 and lubricating the battery-cap O-ring. This is a battery-chemistry/contact caveat affecting the RMR/SRO family, not an SRO-specific optic defect, and is not a formal recall.
  • Trijicon SRO (Specialized Reflex Optic, 1 / 2.5 / 5 MOA): intermittent 'double dot' / false-dot reflection at certain sun angles . First-hand: IntelGoons author and an acquaintance both observed a secondary reflected dot under specific sun angles. Optical artifact, not a functional/zero failure.

Duty and law enforcement adoption

  • Trijicon RMR Type 2 (RM06): USSOCOM selected the RMR Type 2 for its Miniature Aiming System - Day Optics / Handgun Reflex Sight (HRS) program: NSWC Crane awarded Trijicon a $7.6M five-year contract in August 2018 for a modified RMR Type 2 (later offered commercially as the RMR HRS).
  • Trijicon RMR HD: FBI selected the RMR HD (alongside the MRO HD) for its Rifle Red Dot Sights program (IDIQ contract, 2023). Note this is a RIFLE red-dot program, not a pistol/duty-handgun selection. No verified mil/LE pistol duty contract for the RMR HD was found; the well-known USSOCOM handgun reflex sight contract is the older RMR Type 2 (RM06), not the HD.

About Trijicon

The founding idea was an aiming point you can see without switching anything on. Tritium, and later fiber optics, feed an illuminated reticle from ambient light and self-luminous material rather than from a battery, and that approach produced the ACOG, a long-running US military program of record adopted by the Marine Corps as the Rifle Combat Optic and fielded on Army and USMC service rifles. Trijicon now builds plenty of battery-powered LED optics, but the no-battery lineage remains a large part of why the name carries the weight it does.

The company got there by way of a name change. It started in 1981 as Armson USA, importing the Armson OEG sight, and reorganized as Trijicon in 1985 when it began manufacturing night sights domestically in Wixom, Michigan. It is still in Wixom and still privately held by the Bindon family, with founder Glyn Bindon’s family retaining controlling ownership and Stephen Bindon serving as president and CEO.

Country of origin is a per-line question here, not a brand-wide one, and Trijicon is unusually specific about which line is which. Its “Our Story” page puts the bulk of the catalog, the ACOG, VCOG, RMR, RMR HD, RMRcc, RCR, SRO, MRO, MGRS, iron sights, thermal optics and mounts, in Wixom, Michigan or Auburn, California, describing them as “designed, engineered, machined, and assembled” there and “100% Made in the USA.” The AccuPoint riflescopes are assembled stateside from Japanese components, while the Huron, Ascent, Tenmile and Credo riflescope lines are built in Japan to Trijicon’s design and testing specifications.

On the reflex side, the RMR is the reference point, to the extent that its mounting pattern became the footprint other manufacturers design around. The RMR HD updates it, the RMRcc shrinks it for slim carry pistols, the SRO trades some ruggedness for a much larger window, and the MRO covers rifles. It is a short list of models, each of which has been in service a long time.
