Design

The Trijicon RMR is forged from A high-strength aerospace aluminum alloy (yield about 503 MPa / 73 ksi, roughly 1.8x that of 6061-T6) for only a few percent more weight. The go-to for duty and hard-use pistol optics, often forged.Full comparison → aluminum, making the sight lightweight and extremely strong. The optic only weighs 1.2 oz, which is extremely important, especially for handgun applications. The sight has an overall length of 45mm with a width of 28mm and a height of 25mm.

The reflex sight boasts a patented chassis shape that is designed to reduce stress to the lenses by absorbing impact. The optic is built to withstand repeated recoil stress, such as is encountered from slide ride pistols. You will find that it has a low profile without any side protrusions, keeping it snag-free while drawing it from a holster or maneuvering around your tactical gear.

The RMR Type 2 is An optic's Ingress Protection (IP) code from IEC 60529: the first digit rates dust (0 to 6), the second rates water (0 to 8). A digit shown as X was simply not tested.Full comparison → up to 20 meters underwater for 1 hour, achieving an An IEC 60529 rating for continuous immersion deeper than 1 meter, to a depth and time the manufacturer specifies and tests. Reticle

The Type 2 RM06 has an adjustable LED 3.25 MOA red dot reticle. There are eight illumination settings available in manual mode.

Settings 1 through 8 with setting one being the dimmest and setting eight the brightest. In automatic mode, it has five illumination settings utilizing settings 3 through 7 depending on the current light conditions.

The use of an LED light source ensures an extended battery life, so you are always ready.

Lenses

As you would expect, the sight is fitted with multi-coated lenses. These optical coatings reduce glare and internal light loss as well as evening out light transmission across the viewing surface.

The result of the application of these coatings is exceptional image sharpness, clarity, and contrast. The coatings also provide an anti-reflective surface that reduces the shooter’s signature.

The Trijicon RMR is factory adjusted to be parallax-free at 50 meters. Because of this, it is suggested that you zero your point of impact/point of aim at 50 meters to reduce parallax errors.

With the RMR Type 2, you can achieve both eyes open target acquisition with unlimited eye relief under time-sensitive conditions enabling rapid engagement with your target.

Operation

The Trijicon RMR adjustable LED is turned on by pressing any button on the optic. The sight will wake up in automatic mode. Plus and minus buttons are located on the sides of the sight. By pressing and releasing the plus or minus buttons, you increase or decrease the brightness respectively, this also puts the RMR Type 2 in manual mode.

Press and release both buttons simultaneously for less than 3 seconds to return the sight to automatic mode.

The sight is powered by a single A 3-volt lithium coin cell, 20mm across, and the most common red dot battery (about 210 to 240 mAh). You will know when the battery is running low as the dot will become dimmer and dimmer. To change the battery, you must dismount the red dot sight.

Trijicon RMR Type 2 vs. Type 1

Those already familiar with the Trijicon RMR series may remember the RMR Type 1 red dot sights. These sights were mainly for rifle and shotgun applications and were not originally designed to take the repeated stress of slide ride pistols.

Shooters who employed the sight primarily with handgun applications found that the electronics would sometimes fail due to the recoil. The primary problem was with the battery contacts failing, which caused the reticle to flicker and sometimes stop working altogether.

The Trijicon RMR Type 2 upgraded the internals increasing the reflex sight’s durability making for an extremely reliable sight.

Reliability standing

Trijicon RMR Type 2 (RM06)

High reliability

High confidence based on 8 sources, 6 first-hand.

Rounds tested
20000+
Battery
CR2032: up to 4 years continuous (CR2032), per Trijicon; Sage Dynamics observes ~2-5 years 'depending on use' and recommends annual replacement
6 of 6 durability tests passed 2 documented failure modes
What those tests were
  • slide-ride recoil: pass . 20,000 rounds 9mm (115/124gr ball + 124gr +P duty) on a slide-mounted Glock 17, no failures (RM06 Type 2). Round count was still climbing at time of report; a later edition of the same study lists 31,470 (relayed via s2).
  • drop: pass . Per the study's protocol the optic was dropped lens-down from shoulder height onto a hard surface every 500 rounds; the RMR was one of the few optics in the study that never broke a lens in drop testing. A later relay (s2) states the RM06 unit specifically survived 62 lens-down shoulder-height drops and kept functioning. Note: the 62-drop figure is reported second-hand (s2), not extracted from the primary PDF.
  • submersion: pass . Study protocol: submerged in 12 inches of ambient water for 1 hour every 500 rounds; RMR continued to function. No RMR-specific ingress or zero-shift figure was published beyond 'continued to function'.
  • freeze: pass . Study protocol: frozen at 30-28 F for 24 hours every 500 rounds; continued to function. No RMR-specific failure or zero-shift number published.
  • heat: pass . Study protocol: heated at 150 F for 24 hours every 500 rounds; continued to function. No RMR-specific failure or zero-shift number published.
  • submersion: pass with caveat . Incidental real-world water exposure across two live classes in rain/torrential downpour: no electronic failure, no rust/corrosion. With water pooled on the rear lens the dot would 'scatter and starburst' and hits became substantially harder, but the reviewer still made hits to 25 yards. Type 2 RM06.

Aggregated from others' first-hand testing, not our own. We surface a sourced reputation tier rather than inventing a score the evidence cannot support.
