Exclusions, as published
Consumable items such as batteries, wear and tear, and damage caused by misuse or improper handling. Forcing the adjustment screws past their stops damages the sight and voids the warranty. Shield reserves the right to reject claims where products have not been used as intended. Non-Shield products it sells are subject to the original manufacturer's warranty terms.

Documented failure modes
- Shield Sights RMSc (Reflex Mini Sight compact): Dot flickers/shuts off under recoil then immediately re-appears, making the dot untrackable through recoil . Caleb Giddings ran two RMSc units across a TX22 Compact, Taurus 856 TORO, and Taurus 327 Defender TORO. First unit failed this way at ~250 rounds on the TX22 and recurred after 150 more rounds on a revolver; trivial recoil (.22 LR, .32 Long) was enough to trigger it. A second unit failed similarly around 500 rounds of mixed use. One unit had run about two years before failing, and a battery swap did not fix it.
- Shield Sights RMSc (Reflex Mini Sight compact): Lens cracked inside the housing from recoil alone, no drop . OpticsPlanet customer review: lens cracked after ~800 rounds on a Sig P365. A second OpticsPlanet reviewer reported lens weakening/cracking after only 250-300 rounds. Both noted lens damage is explicitly excluded from warranty, requiring a paid ($90) repair shipment to the UK.
- Shield Sights SMSc (Shield Mini Sight Compact, 4 MOA / 8 MOA): auto-brightness sensor failure: dot became invisible in direct sunlight (worked fine indoors); new batteries did not fix it . Reported by a single forum user (SW337); other posters concluded it was likely a faulty auto-brightness sensor rather than a battery issue, and a moderator recommended a warranty claim. Note: another poster in the same thread reported auto-brightness working flawlessly for almost 4 years, but that poster explicitly stated they own a Shield RMSc, a different model, not the SMSc, so that report is not usable as evidence about the SMSc's reliability and has been excluded here. A separate SMSc owner (in a different thread) reported 4+ years of trouble-free use, which is the only same-model long-term data point available.
- Shield Sights SMSc (Shield Mini Sight Compact, 4 MOA / 8 MOA): mounting screws backed out / optic came loose under recoil, requiring thread-locker or teflon tape to hold . Owner bllefkay reported: 'The optic did loosen after 200 rounds so I'll have to loctite when I get home,' and later switched to teflon tape and hand-tightening instead of loctite. A second poster in the same thread, MrMichaelActual, independently corroborated the same failure mode on the same gun/optic combination: 'the only weapon I have ever had an optic come loose on was this exact gun and optic.' Two independent reports on the same thread raises this above a single-anecdote confidence level, though still a small sample.
- Shield Sights SMSc (Shield Mini Sight Compact, 4 MOA / 8 MOA): battery failure/depletion after roughly one month of use, with no dot visibility in bright conditions . Owner bllefkay reported the battery needed replacing after about a month. This is a single report and could reflect a defective cell rather than a systemic issue, but it stands in sharp contrast to the manufacturer's 20,000-hour / 2-3-year claims (see battery.claimed) and to the lack of any independently verified runtime test.
