About EOTech

Holography is the whole argument for EOTech. Rather than reflect an LED off a coated lens, a holographic sight reconstructs its reticle from a laser-illuminated hologram, which is what buys you a large window, a reticle that stays usable when the window is partly obstructed, and the distinctive 68 MOA ring around a 1 MOA dot. EOTech pioneered that approach for shooters and still dominates it. One serious competitor works the same way, the Vortex AMG UH-1, and on a consumer shelf that is the entire field.

The company has built these sights since 1995, out of roots in the Environmental Research Institute of Michigan, and it still works from Plymouth, Michigan. It styles itself EOTECH in all caps on its own site; the mixed-case form used here is the one that has stuck in general usage. Since July 2020 the business has been owned by American Holoptics, an affiliate of the Michigan family office Koucar Management, which bought it from L3Harris Technologies for $42 million. EOTech states its sights are designed, developed and manufactured in the US.

The history includes a genuine black eye worth knowing about. In November 2015 the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York filed and simultaneously settled a False Claims Act suit alleging that the company, then L-3 Communications EOTech, knew its sights suffered thermal drift in extreme cold, heat and humidity and concealed that from federal agencies. The settlement was $25.6 million. The business has changed hands twice since, but the episode is part of why some shooters still ask pointed questions about EOTech before buying.

Special operations use has continued through all of it, and USSOCOM awarded EOTech a $26.3 million five-year contract in April 2019 for holographic sights and G33 magnifiers. The two products covered here, the EXPS3 and the G33 magnifier, are exactly that pairing.
