Leupold is the oldest name on this site, and one of the very few still answering to nobody. The company began in 1907 as Leupold & Voelpel, took the Leupold & Stevens name in 1942, and remains privately held by the fifth generation of the Leupold family, with no corporate parent above it. Operations run from Beaverton, Oregon.

Riflescopes are the core of the business and always have been, which shapes how Leupold approaches red dots. They are an extension of a hunting and precision-optics catalog rather than the reason the company exists, and that shows up as conservative, durable designs instead of long feature lists. The military record follows the same logic: the Mark 5HD was selected as the day optic for the US Army’s Precision Sniper Rifle program, a precision-rifle result rather than a red dot one.

Manufacturing is a per-product question. Leupold’s own blog quotes president and CEO Bruce Pettet saying that every Leupold product intended to be mounted on a firearm is designed, machined and assembled in the United States, covering riflescopes, mounting systems and the tactical and Gold Ring spotting scopes, all built in Beaverton. Binoculars and non-tactical spotting scopes go unaddressed by that statement, so the made-in-USA claim cannot be stretched across the whole catalog.

Leupold makes most sense for a buyer who already trusts the brand from a rifle scope and wants a pistol or carbine optic from the same company, or for whom the lifetime service posture of a long-established family firm carries real weight.
